Best email marketing software for small businesses
Choosing email marketing software is one of the first real decisions a small business owner faces. The options are genuinely good, and the differences matter: the wrong tool can mean paying for a list-size tier you don't need, or missing automations that would save you hours each week. This guide covers the six platforms we compare in depth, with pricing and features taken from each vendor's public pages as of October 2026.
The short answer
For most small businesses starting out, Kit (formerly ConvertKit) is the best first choice. Its free plan supports up to 10,000 subscribers — far more generous than any rival — and the automation builder is genuinely powerful without being overwhelming.
If you run an online store on Shopify or WooCommerce, start with Klaviyo instead. Its eCommerce flows (abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase) are pre-built and production-ready.
If you need deep automation with a built-in CRM and plan to grow beyond a simple newsletter, ActiveCampaign is the most powerful option, but it has a steeper learning curve.
What we compared
We looked at six tools: Mailchimp, Kit, ActiveCampaign, Klaviyo, Omnisend, and Drip. For each we checked: free plan limits, entry paid pricing per 1,000 contacts, automation depth, eCommerce integrations, deliverability reputation, and the quality of the onboarding experience.
We did not run our own deliverability tests or pay for these tools with our own money. All claims are based on publicly available vendor documentation and published third-party benchmarks. Where a claim depends on a specific plan, we name the plan.
Prices below are per vendor pricing pages, October 2026. They can change — verify before subscribing.
Mailchimp: best for absolute beginners
Mailchimp has the most polished drag-and-drop email builder of any tool on this list, and its free plan (up to 250 contacts) lets you start without a credit card. It's the obvious starting point if you've never sent a marketing email before.
The catch: pricing rises sharply once you outgrow the free tier, and automation is limited on the Essentials plan ($13/mo). Most small businesses with real automation needs end up on Standard ($20/mo) or higher.
Kit: best free plan, best for creators
Kit's free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers with no time limit — it's the most generous in the category. If you're a blogger, podcaster, or course creator building an audience, this is where to start.
The paid Creator plan starts at $33/mo for 1,000 subscribers and unlocks automations, funnels, and integrations. Tag-based subscriber management is Kit's biggest technical advantage over Mailchimp.
ActiveCampaign: most powerful automations
ActiveCampaign's Starter plan gives you access to its visual automation builder, which is the deepest of any tool at this price. The Plus plan adds a built-in CRM, making it the only tool here that covers both email marketing and contact management in one place. ActiveCampaign does not list prices publicly — request a quote at activecampaign.com/pricing.
There's no free plan — only a 14-day trial. And the platform has a learning curve: expect a couple of hours to get oriented before you send your first campaign.
Klaviyo: best for eCommerce
Klaviyo is built around one use case: online stores. Its Shopify and WooCommerce integrations are deep enough to trigger emails based on browsing behavior, cart value, purchase history, and predicted lifetime value. No other tool on this list matches that out of the box.
The free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 emails per month — enough to test. Visit klaviyo.com/pricing for current paid plan rates.
Omnisend: best value for multi-channel
Omnisend bundles email, SMS, and web push notifications on all paid plans, making it strong value if you want all three channels. It integrates well with Shopify, BigCommerce, and WooCommerce, and its pre-built eCommerce automations are close to Klaviyo's quality at a lower price.
Free plan covers 250 contacts and 500 emails/month. Standard plan starts at $11.20/mo for 500 contacts.
Drip: best for DTC brands with large lists
Drip is priced differently from the others: its paid plan starts at $39/mo for 2,500 contacts and uses flat-rate pricing tiers above that, which makes costs more predictable for larger lists. There's no free plan.
Drip's revenue attribution and purchase-intent segmentation are its main advantages. It's best suited to direct-to-consumer brands that already have a meaningful customer list.
How to choose
If you're just starting and have no list yet: Kit (free plan, generous limits).
If you run a Shopify or WooCommerce store: Klaviyo or Omnisend.
If you need complex automations + CRM in one tool: ActiveCampaign.
If you want the simplest possible interface: Mailchimp.
If you have 2,500+ contacts and want predictable pricing: Drip.
