Kit review: is it worth it for creators?

1 October 20266 min read

Kit (rebranded from ConvertKit in 2023) has built its reputation on one thing: the most generous free plan in the email marketing category, combined with automation tools that rival paid tiers elsewhere. It's the default recommendation for creators — bloggers, podcasters, newsletter writers, and course builders — who want to grow an audience without paying until they have to.

Pricing

Kit's free plan supports up to 10,000 subscribers with unlimited emails — no time limit, no credit card required. That alone sets it apart from every other tool in this comparison.

The Creator plan starts at $33/mo for 1,000 subscribers and unlocks automations, sequences, and third-party integrations. Creator Pro ($66/mo for 1,000 subscribers) adds newsletter referral programs, subscriber scoring, and advanced reporting.

What Kit does well

Tag-based subscriber management is Kit's strongest technical feature. Instead of managing multiple lists, you apply tags to subscribers based on their behaviour — what they clicked, what they bought, what page they came from — and trigger automations based on those tags. This is more flexible than Mailchimp's list-based system.

The visual automation builder (on Creator and above) is clean and intuitive. You can build multi-step sequences, conditional paths, and purchase funnels without needing a developer.

The free plan is exceptional. 10,000 subscribers, unlimited emails, unlimited landing pages, and the ability to sell digital products for free (Kit takes an 8.5% transaction fee on free plans; 3.5% on paid plans).

Pros

  • ✓ Free plan covers up to 10,000 subscribers — best in class
  • ✓ Tag-based segmentation is more flexible than list-based systems
  • ✓ Visual automation builder is intuitive
  • ✓ Built-in landing pages and opt-in forms
  • ✓ Digital product selling built in (even on free plan)

Cons

  • ✗ Fewer email templates than Mailchimp
  • ✗ Email designer is less polished
  • ✗ eCommerce integrations are limited compared to Klaviyo
  • ✗ Best features locked behind Creator plan

Who Kit is best for

Kit is built for creators — anyone whose business runs through an audience: bloggers, podcasters, course creators, coaches, and newsletter publishers. If that's you, it's the best free plan available and a sensible upgrade path.

It's not the right tool for a product store. Kit's eCommerce integrations are functional but shallow. Klaviyo or Omnisend are better choices there.

Our verdict

Best free plan in the category (up to 10,000 subscribers). Ideal for creators and newsletter publishers.
